Multi-Ligament Knee Injury

A multi-ligament knee injury (MLKI) involves damage to two or more major knee ligaments — ACL, PCL, MCL, FCL, and/or the posterolateral corner. These injuries result from high-energy trauma and represent the most complex challenges in knee surgery. Knee dislocation with potential vascular and nerve compromise must be ruled out immediately.

Dr. Joe Cooper, who trained at the prestigious Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colorado, has specialized expertise in diagnosing and surgically managing complex multi-ligament knee injuries.

Why Prompt Evaluation Is Critical

Multi-ligament injuries — especially knee dislocations — carry risk of injury to the popliteal artery and peroneal nerve. These complications require urgent evaluation and can have serious consequences if missed.

Treatment

Surgical reconstruction is recommended for most patients, addressing all involved structures in a staged or combined approach. Dr. Cooper creates a detailed, individualized surgical and rehabilitation plan for each patient.

Recovery

Recovery typically takes 12–18 months for full return to demanding activity. Dr. Cooper coordinates closely with physical therapists throughout the rehabilitation process.
